1. Eligibility requirements
Before beginning the application process, ensure you meet the following eligibility requirements:
be a US citizen, US national, or permanent resident
intend to pursue a research-based Master’s or Ph.D.
be enrolled in an eligible program at an accredited United States graduate institution, with a US campus, by fall following selection
be at an early stage in your graduate career
have completed no more than one academic year of full-time graduate study (or the equivalent)
Graduate students are limited to only one application , submitted either in the first year or in the second year of graduate school.

2. Application Materials

3. Submission Process

4. Selection Process

7. Terms of Awards
Fellowships are for a two-year term, beginning on September 15th of the award year.
Fellowships are paid in a single lump sum.
The Fellowship amount is $xx,xxx.
Fellowship funds may be used by the fellow for any expense judged supportive of the fellow’s research including staffing, professional travel, lab expenses, equipment, or summer salary support.
Fellowship funds may not be used for indirect costs or overhead charges.
Fellows are obligated to notify the SSRP if they are changing institutions.
Once per year, Fellows (or their institution) are obligated to submit both a substantive report (detailing what is being done) and a financial report (detailing how much money has been spent and on what).
For Current Fellows
I won a fellowship. When will I get my grant paperwork?
The grant agreements are sent out in the spring after the February announcement.
When is my fellowship start date?
The start dates of Sloan Research Fellowships are always on September 15th of the year of the award.
May I use fellowship funds for research expenses incurred before the September 15th beginning of the grant?
Yes. Though the fellowship officially starts on September 15th, fellowship funds may be used for research expenses incurred during the summer immediately prior to the fellowship start date.
Can my fellowship funds be used for indirect costs and/or overhead costs?
No. Fellowship funds may not be used for indirect or overhead charges by the Fellow's institution.
What are the reporting requirements for a fellowship?
Fellows must submit both a substantive and financial report at yearly intervals for the duration of the fellowship. Reports are due each year no later than November 15.
Can I submit a paper or papers in lieu of a substantive report?
Yes.
Can I use my fellowship to cover summer salary?
Yes, but salary support for Fellows during the summer is limited to a maximum of two-ninths of established academic salary. This summer research period is to be regarded as two full months. This policy is included in the terms of your grant agreement.
How do I submit financial or substantive annual reports?
Please upload them at support@cgrads.com. (You will be prompted to create a login.)
Can I get a no-cost extension?
Yes. The Foundation allows for one two-year no-cost extension. Please email support@cgrads.com to make the request. All reporting must be up-to-date, and a current financial report must be sent in order to approve the extension.
What do I do if I am moving institutions?
Please email support@cgrads.com to notify us of your move. If you are moving to another degree-granting institution, we can transfer the balance of funds. We will need a closeout financial report and refund check from your old institution, and the name and email of the person at your new institution who will handle your grants.
